Locker Room Conversation - What Do Women Talk About
By Herman Ray Barber | January 17, 2012 at 08:23 AM EST | 2 comments

Here it is, the first month of the New Year and the gyms are crowded with those hoping to get serious with establishing an exercise routine. If you are one of those people, best of luck!

Thus far, people have written enough on this blog to indicate that one big advantage of going to the gym is watching the people. You do hear and see things that don’t occur in everyday life in the ordinary world.

Listen to the locker room conversations. I do this everyday and have concluded that most men talk about sports in the locker room. If you took what you heard literally, you might believe that most guys actually play on collage or pro teams. They talk in the first person.  For example, “If I am going to lose, I am going to lose to someone that I respect.”  Also, there is an abundance of the word “we” – as in “we are going out there on Sunday and kick some Dallas ass.”

A foreigner would think, based on locker room conversation, that most American men have neither families nor jobs. This is just another reason to go to the gym. Here you can ponder over why people talk about whatever seems to dominate conversations.

I have a burning question. What do women talk about in the locker room? I don’t have a clue. Naturally, if I could have the power of invisibility, I would go in there and listen. Of course, I would keep my eyes closed.

It is what it is

A friend’s favorite saying is “It is what it is.”  This has caught on with me and I say this to myself quite frequently.

As you can see by this website, I spend quite a bit of time in the gym. My pet peeve is people setting on weight machines. Some people take a newspaper, i-Pod, and a cup of coffee to a machine. The complete a set of an exercise and then sit there and read the paper, sip coffee and jam to their favorite tunes or listen to recorded books. Who really knows what they are listening to? Some believe this is an ideal place to talk on their cell phone or text others.

This phenomenon continues to grow. Fewer women monopolize the equipment than men. Age doesn’t seem to be a factor. Some guys my age (or older) are as likely to do this as men in their twenties. There go those theories about age differences and what your parents should have taught you.

I now just accept this as a societal change and it is what it is. What do you think?
